If your Google Adwords seem to be reporting lower than expected leads and sales, there are a number of items you can check.  One key item to check is that all of the Landing Pages for your Google ads, have Wicked Reports Tracking Code on them.

You also want to verify that the URL is not doing any type of redirect before the user gets to the final landing page from a click.  This includes URL shorteners which may be losing your tracking parameters.  To begin verifying that your Google Adwords landing pages have Wicked Tracking Code on them, you can follow these steps:

1) Open the Tracking Code Verification tab

2) For each Google Ad URL, verify that it is not a shortened link (bit.ly, goo.gl, etc.)

If the link is a shortened URL, the URL should be replaced with a normal URL.  shortened URL typically strip tracking parameters when they redirect.

For example, the following shortened URL will redirect to www.WickedReports.com: goo.gl/TbwSwP

If you add tracking parameters to the end of the URL, when you are redirected to www.WickedReports.com, you will notice that the tracking parameters are removed

This means that any Google Ad with a shortened URL will lose the tracking parameters that are added.

** Note: your URL Shortener may pass tracking parameters, so be sure to run this test for yours

3) Verify that when you go to the URL, you are not redirected to a different URL.

If you are redirected to a different URL, test to ensure that tracking parameters are not lost when you go to that URL.  To test this out, add "?utm_source=wicked-test" to the end of the URL.

www.yourtesturl.com?utm_source=wicked-test

If when you get to the landing page, the URL does NOT have utm_source=wicked-test, then you should update your URL to be the final landing page, instead of a redirect.

4) For EACH separate URL used in the Google Ads, you will determine the purpose of that URL

4a)  PURPOSE 1: The page is a Not an Optin Page and Not an Order Form (ex.  Sales letter page, blog post, etc.)

In Tracking Code Verification, select "Traffic detection" and enter the URL of the Google Ad

Click Start Test and a new browser tab will open

Once loaded, go back to Wicked Reports and click "End Test"

If we find the Tracking Code on that page, the test will Pass.  If not, the test will Fail

4b) PURPOSE 2: The page is an Optin Page and the primary goal of the page is to get users to Optin (lead magnet, webinar, etc.)

In Tracking Code Verification, select "Optin tracking" and enter the URL of the Google Ad

Click Start Test and a new browser tab will open

Once loaded, optin to the page with the email address:  testing@wickedreports.com

Go back to Wicked Reports and click "End Test"

If we we can track the optin successfully, the test will Pass.  If not, the test will Fail (if it fails, did you use testing@wickedreports.com?)

4c) PURPOSE 3: The page is an Order Form

In Tracking Code Verification, select "Sales tracking" and enter the URL of the Google Ad

Click Start Test and a new browser tab will open

Once loaded, place a test order with the email address:  testing@wickedreports.com

Go back to Wicked Reports and click "End Test"

If we we can track the order successfully, the test will Pass.  If not, the test will Fail (if it fails, did you use testing@wickedreports.com?)
