Because Wicked Reports is heavily based on UTM and/or WickedID values in your links, it’s critical that they are being used consistently and correctly.

One of the most common questions that we get is, “How do I know what UTMs to use?” This article will address using the Google Adwords Tracking Template to ensure Wicked Reports tracks your ads properly.  In our Tracking Template, you will not be using UTMs.  You will be using a WickedID similar to how Facebook Tracking works.



[IMPORTANT]: Wicked Reports supports and reports on nearly ALL Google Adwords data in your account.  

Please note that there is an exception:  Expanded Text Ads with an additional line of description are experimental ad formats and are not supported by the Google API. Because of this, Wicked Reports cannot report on these ads using the Tracking Template.

If you are using Expanded Text Ads with an additional line of description, you will not see the data in for these Ads in Wicked Reports unless you follow these steps:

1.  Set up Tracking Template as noted below for your traditional Google Ads
2. Set Ad level UTM values for the Expanded Text Ads with additional line of description.  These will overwrite the Tracking Template you set up
3. Add the Costs manually to Wicked Reports for the Expanded Text Ads to get as close to accurate ROI as possible 

OR

Switch your Ads back to traditional Expanded Text ads, as these will track as expected.


 

Google Adwords Tracking Template

UTMs for Adwords should be set up using the Tracking Template inside Google Adwords. This template will be set at the account-level. So once you set it, you won’t need to change it.  Our template will use specific values for the purposes of Wicked Reports tracking, but will allow you to turn on Auto-Tagging for any existing tracking you use UTMs for.

To set the Template

  1. Log into Google Adwords
  2. Navigate to Shared Libraries -> URL Options
            

      3. For Tracking template, select Edit

      


Paste the template into the text box



Your template should look like this (i.e. you will copy/paste it exactly as it is here):

What does all this mean? When an Ad is created, the URL created uses this template. So, the UTM values that you put into the template will be used for all Ads.

{lpurl}: Landing Page URL that Ad is linking to

wickedsource=google:
 We are using the WickedID/WickedSource setup and we are telling Wicked Reports that this is a google Ad

wickedid={creative}:
 WickedID will be the Ad ID so Wicked Reports can use the proper information from your Adwords Campaign, Ad Group and Ad

wtm_term={ifsearch:{keyword}}{ifcontent:{placement}}:
if the Ad is displayed because of a search, this will be populated with the term that was searched. If the ad is displayed on a website because of AdSense, this will have the URL which the Ad was click from.

wdevice={device}:
Google will populate with the device being used

wtm_campaign={campaignid}:
Google will populate with the Campaign ID of the Ad

wtm_content={adgroupid}:
Google will populate with the Ad Group ID of the Ad


 
     4. Click Save
     5. Ensure Auto-Tagging is set to Yes and now your Ads will have UTMs added automatically.


New Google Adwords UI Instructions

1. Log into your Adwords account and click on "Settings" from the overview screen.
2. From here, choose the "Account Settings" Tab
3. Paste the tracking template into the field and Hit "Save"
4. Make sure Autotagging is also enabled and set to "YES"
5. You're Done!



Here is the adwords tracking template you want to use:

Links In a YouTube Ad

YouTube Ads allow for Annotation Links.  You want the WickedID of these links to match your Adwords WickedID and should be set up accordingly. To track clicks correctly for Annotation Links, you will use a URL that looks like:


<landing page url>?wtm_source=google&wickedid=<ad id>
 
You will replacing <landing page url> with the landing page and <ad id> with the ad id

With this setting, clicks on the Ad Link and Clicks on the Annotation Link should track correctly.

It is important to note that you must turn off any tracking templates you currently use at any level of your Google AdWords account and only use the template we provided above.
